Initially released in January 2020, Matthew Ball’s formative piece titled “The Metaverse: What It Is, Where to Find It, And Who Will Build It" helped set off the Big Tech race to create the “next Internet”.
Ball’s framing and provocations continue to serve as a canonical starting point for those seeking to understand the Metaverse and how it will transform society, our economy, and existence at large. He also warned about the future built by corporations for the point of serving ads, selling widgets, and controlling users.
A year and a half later, many companies seem determined to do exactly that. They even want to own the name: Metaverse.
To Ball, the Metaverse can be more than the “next Internet”. It can also return the Internet to its originating ethos – one of openness, collaboration, and common standards which serve the developer and user before the platform. For this to be the case, Ball believes we – developers and users – need a mechanism that can offer developers greater profits than are currently available via closed platforms while offering users a healthier and more respectful experience.
Ball believes that this mechanism can be the DAO.
“Throughout human history”, Ball writes “innovations in self-organization and financing have always led to societal change. Through DAOs, individuals can collaborate and succeed at a scale which can contend with the mightiest companies on earth.”
The winner – or winners – of the Original Metaverse Essay NFT will serve as the founding members to a newly established Metaverse DAO with a goal of building a more open and participatory Metaverse, governed by its community. Matthew is donating a portion of proceeds directly into the new Metaverse DAO as founding capital.
